The Option performance

Making a Tune

The Option test forms the final part of the Music Medal and is designed to help candidates build sound musicianship skills. Candidates
select one of four Options to perform as part of the assessment, providing them with the flexibility to play to their own individual strengths.

Preparation

The Teacher-Assessor must download a set of confidential Option tests for each candidate from the Entries and Results website no more than eight weeks before the assessment. Throughout this period the confidentiality of the Option tests must be safeguarded.

The candidate must select one of the four Options immediately before the assessment. It is important to establish the choice of Option before providing the personalised sheets so that there is no question of the candidate looking at and comparing the tests and only then deciding which one to do!

The performance

The Teacher-Assessor should verbally introduce the candidate’s selection of Option before the performance.

If the candidate selects Make a Tune, Question & Answer (at Bronze to Platinum levels) or Sight-Reading, you should provide them with half a minute of preparation time and time this period accurately. You must not intervene in any way or provide assistance (e.g. by pointing out accidentals) to the candidate during this time.

Candidates who select Make a Tune or Question & Answer should be provided with a pulse by the Teacher-Assessor. When providing this it is recommended that you beat or click time and count the beats out loud. Candidates who select Sight-Reading should not be provided with a pulse.

Once the candidate has finished his or her Option performance, the assessment is over!
