The Solo performance

Trumpet

The Solo component forms the second part of the Music Medal. This section of the assessment is designed to help candidates develop musical independence and individuality, allowing them to focus on their own sound as well as their personal expression.

Preparation and positioning

It is important before beginning the Solo performance to make sure that the members of the group who have finished their part in the preceding Ensemble do not distract the candidate.

Please note that the video recording should not be stopped between components and should run continuously throughout the assessment.

The performance

The candidate should verbally introduce the piece and publication title before beginning his or her Solo performance.

If the candidate requires a CD backing track accompaniment, the Teacher-Assessor should be in a position to start this before the assessment begins.

Performance Notes

  • The candidate may play his or her Solo piece either with an accompaniment (live or CD backing track) or unaccompanied.
  • Repeats may be played at the discretion of the Teacher-Assessor or candidate. However, those repeats that are essential to the musical structure must be observed.
  • Ornaments may be simplified or omitted – a more confident simpler version is preferable to a performance becoming unrhythmic.

After completing the Solo performance the candidate will be given the opportunity to select and perform an Option test from those provided by the Teacher-Assessor.
