Music Medals aim to encourage pupils to acquire the knowledge, skills and understanding to perform music – both within an ensemble and individually – with an appropriate control of sounds and with a sense of interpretation that enables the intentions of the composer to be communicated.
Whilst Music Medals assessments take place in groups -- of equal or mixed ability -- only one member of the group is assessed per Medal. This ensures that full attention is given to their contribution and that individual attainment is recognised.
The Music Medals assessment incorporates the following three components:
The candidate plays an individual line in an ensemble piece for two, three or four players. Ensemble playing provides invaluable experience of the skills of leading, counting-in, interaction, balancing, listening, and blending with others.
The candidate plays one piece from the solo repertoire list for his or her instrument and Medal. This part of the assessment underlines the importance of developing musical independence and individuality.
The candidate selects one Option test from a choice of four. Each test helps to build sound musicianship skills and candidates can play to their own individual strengths.
