1. Who makes the recordings?

The filming is carried out by the Teacher-Assessor.

2. Who has access to the video-recordings?

At various stages after filming, the video-recordings may be handled by any or all of the following people, all of whom are formally connected with Music Medals:

  • The Teacher-Assessor
  • A Music Medals Co-ordinator (registered by a Music Medals Partner)
  • ABRSM Music Medals and Quality Assurance staff
  • ABRSM moderators (who receive the video-recordings at their private address where they are likely to carry out moderation)

3. For what purposes are the video-recordings used?

The recorded material has two uses:

  1. Moderation - this is the primary use; for the majority of candidates moderation is the only time when the recording of their assessment will be viewed.
  2. Archiving - a small sample of recordings, covering a selection of levels, instruments and result categories, is retained by ABRSM in order to build up a record of standards in compliance with QCA requirements.

4. What action is taken to safeguard the security of the video-recordings?

ABRSM makes video-recordings available only to those formally connected with Music Medals as listed above.  The security of the recorded material is controlled in the following ways:

1. Agreement to abide by Music Medals Regulations

All of the above agree to abide by the Music Medals Regulations, thus confirming that they will not make use of the video-recordings for any purpose other than those described in the Regulations and that they will not make copies or distribute them in any format.

2. Criminal Records Bureau checks

Moderators and ABRSM Music Medals and Quality Assurance staff are required to undergo CRB checks.

3. Secure storage

The material is held securely in appropriate storage facilities.

5. How is the process of gaining parental consent carried out?

The Associated Board requires those submitting a Music Medals entry to confirm at the time of entry that they have obtained written consent from the parents/guardians of all candidates being entered.  The process of gaining written consent is the responsibility of the organization making entries.  However, in order to assist in this process, ABRSM makes available a sample parental consent form outlining the uses of the recordings. This allows the organization concerned to ensure that parents understand what is entailed.
