Video footage policy

A central feature of Music Medal assessments is the use of video footage of candidates, primarily for moderation purposes. The teacher conducts the assessment in the role of Teacher-Assessor, recording it on video and submits this video-recording to ABRSM for moderation.

Moderation is the process for ensuring consistency in the marking standards applied by the Teacher-Assessor.  ABRSM office staff forward the video-recording to a moderator who views it and corroborates or amends the assessment before returning the video-recording to ABRSM.

After moderation, the video-recording is held for a period of three months and is then either wiped and the blank tape returned for re-use or, in a very few randomly selected cases, it is archived.  Archived material is used for monitoring and tracking standards over time, in line with ABRSM’s internal quality-assurance procedures and as part of the process expected by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority.

Issues of parental consent and good practice

ABRSM is keen to ensure that the purposes and use of these video-recordings are understood when parents/guardians give their consent to their children being filmed and that good practice is adopted, not only with regard to gaining parental consent but also in the subsequent handling of the video footage.
